Stage 2 Public Engagement for Tung Chung New Town Extension Study launched Stage 2 Public Engagement for Tung Chung New Town Extension Study launched ************************************************************ The Planning Department and the Civil Engineering and Development Department today (May 21) launched the Stage 2 Public Engagement for the Tung Chung New Town Extension Study to gauge the public's views on the planning direction, scale and area of development for the initial land use options. Members of the public are welcome to participate in the activities. In the Stage 1 Public Engagement last year, the views collected suggested that the public in general agreed that Tung Chung has the potential for further development. Taking into account such views and the planning and engineering considerations, the Government has formulated initial land use options for developing Tung Chung East and Tung Chung West in a holistic manner. Two initial land use options are proposed for Tung Chung East. The "Livable Town" option aims at housing more population through higher development densities around the proposed MTR station while the "Economic Vibrancy" option offers an opportunity to create a regional commercial hub in Tung Chung alongside housing supply. For Tung Chung West, the theme of the land use option is a balance between development and conservation. It is proposed to provide additional housing land in addition to developing some of the existing rural areas with limited reclamation. The Stage 2 Public Engagement will last for two months until July 21. Activities including a community workshop, a public forum, briefings and roving exhibitions will be conducted. Details of the activities and engagement documents are available at the website of the Study (www.tung-chung.hk).
