Stage 1 Public Engagement for Tung Chung New Town Extension Study launched Stage 1 Public Engagement for Tung Chung New Town Extension Study launched ************************************************************ The Planning Department (PlanD) and the Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) today (June 12) launched the Stage 1 Public Engagement for the Tung Chung New Town Extension Study. Under the Revised Concept Plan for Lantau published in 2007, Tung Chung is to be developed into a new town accommodating a population of 220,000. The engineering infrastructure works for Phases 1, 2 and 3A of the Tung Chung New Town development have already been completed, supporting a population of about 108,000. As part of the Government's enhanced efforts to increase housing land supply, the feasibility of planning and engineering for the remaining development of Tung Chung New Town will be evaluated with a view to meeting Hong Kong's long-term housing demand and the aspirations of Tung Chung residents. The aims of the Study are to explore Tung Chung's development potential and opportunities, determine the scope of the Tung Chung extension, and improve public facilities for the community and the region as a whole. During Stage 1 of the three-stage public engagement exercise, the PlanD and the CEDD will brief and consult the Islands District Council, the Tung Chung Rural Committee, the Town Planning Board, the Legislative Council, professional institutions, green groups and community stakeholders. A roving exhibition will be held from June 18 to July 6 and a public forum will take place on July 7. The views collected in Stage 1 will be used to formulate the Preliminary Outline Development Plan. Details about the Stage 1 Public Engagement, including the consultation documents, roving exhibition and public forum are available on the Study's website (www.tung-chung.hk).
